"We don't sell your data. We don't share it. We don't analyze it. hudhud works entirely on your device, and that's intentional."

What we collect

By default, hudhud collects nothing. The app runs entirely on your device. Your feeding logs, species notes, photos, and journal entries never leave your device unless you choose to back them up.

If you opt in to cloud backup or device sync, we store:

  • Your email address (to identify your account)
  • An encrypted copy of your journal data (entries, species, notes, photos)
  • Basic app version and OS version for troubleshooting

We do not collect your name, location, contacts, browsing history, or any data unrelated to your use of the app.

What we don't collect

To be explicit about it:

  • No advertising identifiers
  • No third-party analytics SDKs
  • No behavioral tracking or session recording
  • No sale or sharing of data with any third party
  • No profiling, targeting, or aggregation of your journal content

There are no ads in hudhud and there never will be. We have no business model that benefits from knowing about your birds.

How your data is stored

Local data is stored using your device's standard encrypted storage. If you enable cloud backup:

  • Data is encrypted end-to-end before leaving your device
  • Only you hold the decryption key (derived from your password)
  • We cannot read the contents of your backup, even if compelled
  • Backups are stored on infrastructure we control, in the United States

You can delete your backup at any time from the app's settings. Deletion is immediate and permanent on our servers.

Location and permissions

hudhud can optionally use your approximate location to set regional bird species defaults and to tag feeding entries with a rough location label (e.g., "Portland, OR"). If you grant location access:

  • Location is used only at the moment you log a feeding
  • We store only a city-level label, not precise coordinates
  • Location data is never transmitted to our servers
  • You can revoke location access at any time in your device settings

Photos you attach to entries are stored locally and (if backup is enabled) in your encrypted backup. EXIF metadata is stripped before storage.

Notifications

If you enable feeding reminders, hudhud uses your device's local notification system. No notification content passes through our servers. Turning off notifications in your device settings disables them completely.

Children's privacy

hudhud is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us information, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.

Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, export, and delete any personal data we hold. Because most data lives on your device, you exercise most of these rights directly in the app:

  • Export your full journal as a Markdown file from Settings → Export
  • Delete your cloud backup from Settings → Account → Delete Backup
  • Close your account entirely from Settings → Account → Delete Account

For anything else, email us at privacy@hudhud.life. We'll respond within 30 days.

Changes to this policy

If we ever change this policy in a meaningful way, we'll notify you in the app and update the date at the top of this page. We will not retroactively apply weaker privacy practices to data collected under stronger ones.
